What the smart key module actually does
On a push-button Kia, nothing about starting the car is mechanical. When you press the brake and the start button, a sequence runs in under a second.
The module energizes low-frequency antennas positioned around the cabin. Those antennas wake any fob inside their field. The fob answers on a radio-frequency channel with a rolling, encrypted response. The module checks that response against the list of keys it has been told are authorized for this specific vehicle. If it matches, the module tells the engine controller to release the immobilizer and, on cars with an electronic steering lock, releases that too.
Three things follow from this that matter to a diagnosis.
The module is vehicle-specific. Its authorized key list is meaningless in another car. That is deliberate — it is what makes a stolen module worthless.
A new module knows nothing. It ships with an empty or generic configuration. Bolting it in gets you a car that still will not start, because it has not been married to the VIN and it has no authorized keys.
A fob is not the system. Replacing a fob when the module is the failing part is the single most common wasted purchase in this category.
Telluride and Sorento, by generation
Telluride, 2020 onward. There has only been one generation in the US, and it has been push-button smart key from launch across the range. The 2023 facelift brought interior electronics changes but the smart key architecture is consistent.
Sorento, 2016 to 2020 (UM). Mixed. Lower trims used a turn-key ignition with a transponder, upper trims used push-button smart key. Which one you have changes the job completely, so identify it before you call anyone.
Sorento, 2021 onward (MQ4). Push-button smart key across essentially the whole range, on the newer platform shared with the current-generation Kia and Hyundai midsize vehicles.
If you are unsure, the test is the same one that works on every car: if you insert and rotate a key, you have a transponder system. If you press a button, you have a smart key system with a control module.
Module failing, or fob failing
These present similarly from the driver's seat, and telling them apart is the entire value of the diagnostic step. The pattern is what separates them.
Points at the fob:
- One fob works and the other does not. That is definitive — the module cannot be selectively broken for one credential.
- The failure has progressed gradually, with shorter and shorter range before it stopped working entirely. That is a coin cell dying.

- Holding the fob against the marked spot on the column or console starts the car normally. That is the backup path that bypasses the radio link, and its working proves the module is fine.
Points at the module:
- Every fob stopped working at the same time.
- The dash shows a key-not-detected or immobilizer warning even with a known-good fob sitting on the console.
- Symptoms are intermittent and correlate with heat, humidity or rough road, which suggests a connector or a solder joint rather than a credential.
- The vehicle recently had bodywork, a battery replacement that went badly, or water intrusion into a footwell where a module lives.
- The module was replaced by someone else and never programmed, which is a surprisingly frequent call.
Points at neither:
- A weak 12-volt battery. Voltage sags during the start sequence, modules drop offline mid-handshake, and the car refuses to authorize a perfectly good key. It looks exactly like an immobilizer failure. Charge and retest before buying anything. Programming a key versus programming a module
These get conflated constantly and they are genuinely different pieces of work.
Programming a key adds a credential to a list that already exists inside a module already married to your car. The vehicle's identity is settled; you are adding one more authorized fob. It is the shorter job.
Programming a module establishes the vehicle's identity inside a part that has none. The module has to be written with the VIN, configured for the vehicle's option content, and then loaded with an authorized key list that has to be created from scratch. Every key you want to work — including ones you already own — has to be present at that appointment, because a key not present is not on the new list.
That last point is the one that costs people money. If you have three fobs and only bring two to a module programming appointment, the third stops working and has to be added later as a separate job. Bring every fob you own.

A used module arrives married to another VIN and carrying another vehicle's authorized key list. Some modules can be reset and rewritten. Some cannot, by design, and a module that cannot be cleared is scrap in your vehicle regardless of what it cost.
There is also a configuration trap. A module out of a differently optioned vehicle may not support your car's feature set — different antenna counts, different remote start provisions, different steering lock arrangements.
