What those 17 characters actually encode
Positions 1 to 3 — where and by whom it was built
The World Manufacturer Identifier. It tells us the manufacturer and the plant region, which matters more than people expect: the same nameplate built in two countries can ship with different immobilizer hardware in the same model year. A vehicle built for one market may carry a key system the North American version never used.
Positions 4 to 8 — the vehicle descriptor
Body style, engine, restraint system, trim, and — critically for us — often the security package. Two examples of the same model year on the same street can differ here, one with a basic transponder ignition and the other with proximity entry and push-button start. That is a several-hundred-dollar difference in a key job, and there is no way to see it from the curb.
Position 9 — the check digit
A mathematical checksum over the other 16 characters. Its whole job is catching transcription errors. When someone reads us a VIN over the phone and the check digit does not compute, we know a character was misheard before we order anything. It is a small thing that prevents an expensive wrong-part afternoon.
Position 10 — the model year
The single character that most often changes a quote. Immobilizer generations turn over on model-year boundaries, not calendar years, and a car sold in December 2019 may well be a 2020 model with the newer system. We have seen quotes swing by hundreds of dollars on this one character.
Position 11 — the assembly plant
Same reason as the WMI, one level finer. Plant-specific supplier differences show up in lock hardware and occasionally in module part numbers.
Positions 12 to 17 — the serial number
Your car's unique sequence. This is the part that ties to the factory key code — the record of exactly how your locks were cut at the plant.

Every vehicle uses a specific blade profile. Some are simple edge-cut, some are high-security laser or sidewinder cuts requiring a different machine and a lot more time. The VIN tells us which, so the correct blank is in the van when we arrive rather than being discovered as missing.

2. The key code — cutting a blade without the lock
For many vehicles, the VIN can be used through legitimate manufacturer and locksmith channels to retrieve the original factory cutting code. This is the quiet superpower behind mobile all-keys-lost work: with a code, we can cut a blade that will physically operate your locks before we have ever touched the car.
Without a code, the alternative is decoding a lock by hand — reading the wafer heights from a door lock or ignition cylinder. Slower, occasionally requiring a lock to come out, but entirely workable. The VIN tells us which of those two afternoons we are having.
Code retrieval is deliberately gated behind proof of ownership. Nobody gets a key cut to a VIN they cannot show a legitimate connection to, and that gate is a feature — it is the same gate that protects your car from someone who photographed your windshield in a parking lot.
3. The immobilizer generation
This is the technical heart of the quote. Whether your car uses an early fixed-code transponder, a rolling-code system, a modern proximity architecture, or one of the newest heavily-secured platforms determines the tool, the procedure, the wait time and whether the job is even available outside a dealer.

4. Whether a security gateway is in the way
Since the late 2010s, many manufacturers have placed an authentication gateway between the diagnostic port and the modules that matter. Programming a key means getting through it legitimately, which adds a step and sometimes cost. The VIN tells us in advance instead of us finding out plugged into your car. Why a phone quote without a VIN is not a real quote
A caller says "2019 SUV, lost my key." Depending on trim, that is a $180 job or a $600 job, and both answers are defensible. The shop that says "$199, we will be right there" and then produces a different number in your driveway is not necessarily dishonest — they simply quoted something they had no way to know.

Where to find your VIN
